What is a "Balanced Diet"?

What is a "Balanced Diet"? - Spectrum Care Plus

There are many natural remedies for an unhealthy body. But the fundamental, natural method for restoring health is supplying the body with the nutrients it is deficient in, and which it needs, through the foods and drinks one consumes. Our diet should give the body what it needs to repair itself and to build better health.

The body needs the macronutrients which are protein, fats & carbohydrates. There are also forty nutrients that cannot be made in the body - the essential fatty acids, 15 vitamins, 14 minerals, and 10 amino acids. The macronutrients and the forty nutrients are the body’s requirements. From these nutrients our bodies synthesize an estimated 10,000 different compounds essential to the maintenance of good health.

These nutrients must be consumed in the form of food or nutritional supplements.  Understanding and eating a healthy diet is the most important thing you can do. The way to really have good health is to eat the foods that the body needs.

Bodies do not work on chemicals such as preservatives and flavor enhancers. They do not work on pesticides or any of the other varied things you can find in processed foods or even in poorly grown or GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) fruits and vegetables. Bodies also don’t work well with the toxins that exist in the environment (such as those found in poor quality air we breathe or water we drink, and man-made products such as cleaning solvents.)

When toxins or bacteria or viruses are introduced into the body, they should be handled by the immune system. If the body’s immune system cannot fight off these health opponents, you have problems. Again, a compromised immune system results from the body lacking what it needs to successfully create a healthy body.

The Underlying Reason

You will notice that all health conditions have some failure of a system or an organ that needs to function properly. What do the individual organs and body use to function and repair? They need protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids.  Where can you get all of these? Good quality, nutrient dense, whole food.

“Leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can heal the patient with food.” – Hippocrates, The Father of Western Medicine 460 BC.

The foundation of good health comes from a healthy diet that will undercut having to constantly fight for your health.

What should you eat?

You’ve no doubt heard that you should eat a "balanced diet". It is usually a vague term that each person can have a different definition for.

A healthy diet is a diet of real, nutrient dense, whole foods without preservatives, chemicals and that are only minimally processed.

So, if you are looking for these foods, do most of your grocery shopping in the meat and produce departments. Avoid the inner aisles as much as possible, as these aisles usually contain all processed foods available in a grocery store.

For anything you buy that comes in a package, read the labels carefully. Make sure nothing is in the food you purchase except real food. Watch out for high sugar content, preservatives and additives.

A good diet is a matter of designing meals which incorporate foods that give your body a balance of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats, and the essential micronutrients.

As you are building health with your diet, it won’t hurt to supplement your current diet with good "whole food" or "food-based" vitamins and minerals.

Where can I learn about creating a healthy diet?

A good start is to learn the science-based facts about the nutrition the body needs to maintain good health. Then, learn about the foods that provide the essential macronutrients and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals.) Then, learn how to create meals that provide this balanced diet.
